FABFITFUN (FFF) WINTER 2014 UNBOXING AND $10 OFF COUPON CODE (RETAIL VALUE $383.59)

Published December 13, 2014 by thebeholdingeye

Whoever sang “It Never Rains in California” obviously was sorely mistaken. It’s been raining steadily for 2 days now (not that I’m complaining, I love the rain and our state desperately needs the rain) and I was looking forward to just sitting around knitting and watching some trashy reality programs off of the DVR today, a typical lazy Saturday at Casa Beholding Eye.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a familiar sight. The mail carrier going past my window with the distinctive black and pink FabFitFun box, which wasn’t scheduled to be delivered until Tuesday.

Well, that certainly gave me an unexpected burst of energy. Grabbing a cup of coffee, I dug right in.

FFFW1

Yep, there it is. Coffee at the ready, let’s dive in. Full disclosure, I had been made privy to a full list of spoilers a few days ago…But all of you lovelies know that seeing a list, while fun, is not the same as having the actual products in your hands. As it turns out, there was one promised product that didn’t end up in my hands, but I digress. We’ll get to that later.

Drum roll, please…

FFFW2

Opening up the box, the first thing we see is the descriptor pamphlet for the contents of this month’s box. I actually cleaned my glasses to look more closely at the retail value of this box…Seriously, $383.59. UH-MAZING. Let’s see the actual products.

FFFW3

Okay, getting past the descriptor pamphlet and the tissue paper, and moving aside some of the coupon items, here’s what we have.

FFFW4
RETAIL VALUE: $55

Here we have the Zumba 60-minute DVD “Max” and a $25 gift card towards some really cute athletic wear (with free shipping, too!). I’m not usually one who enjoys exercising, unless repeated lifting of the remote control counts. That being said, however, this DVD looks like fun, and what better way to get motivated than with some really cute workout clothes with which to get your Zumba on. I prefer this to the FFF Fall box offering of the online exercise classes. We’ll put this to good use.

FFFW5
RETAIL VALUE: $18

Here’s a $30 gift card (which oddly has a retail value listed as $18…I’m confused, but then I’m still on my first cup of coffee) to Fashion Project. Okay, I’ve checked out the website and you can get some really cute things (mostly high-end) for a GREAT price, and the flip side to that is, every item has to which charity a certain portion of your price goes. For example, I’m currently putting an item in my cart for which $2.75 of my $25 purchase will go to Ronald McDonald House. GREAT cause, GREAT items, GREAT idea. I’m all over this one.

FFFW7
RETAIL VALUE: $29.97

WOOT!!! I love to cook, and this free 3-month membership to Salted TV is right up my alley. A quick peek at the Salted TV website shows an amazing assortment of classes, from Cooking Bootcamp to instruction on preparing sauces, Thanksgiving/holiday dishes, cocktails, introductions to Mexican and Italian cooking, and much, much more. This is probably my favorite item in the box, because I’ll definitely be putting my 3-month membership to very good use.

FFFW12
RETAIL VALUE: $42

Here we have a Daniel Stone COCO Candle in pomegranate scent. It smells wonderful. It’s made with natural coconut wax and claims to provide the cleanest burn available. I already have a house full of wax warmers and a small boutique’s worth of scented tarts and cubes, so I’ll probably be gifting this to someone for the holidays, but it is gorgeous and it does smell divine. It will go to a loving home.

FFFW10

FFFW11
RETAIL VALUE: $30

Ooooh, hand cream. Always a welcome product, but especially during winter months. This one is by Lather, and it’s their AHA hand crème with evening primrose. This is so incredibly thick and luxurious feeling. I applied a small amount to one of my hands when I first opened the box, and it left my skin baby soft. This is a very generous amount of product, too. Probably enough to get me through winter, since a little goes a long ways with this baby. Love it, FFF!

FFFW13
RETAIL VALUE: $39

From Juice Beauty, here we have their Green Apple Peel Sensitive. This is a certified organic product (as I believe all Juice Beauty products are) that claims to exfoliate and refine to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. I’ve been holding onto a Juice Beauty Green Apple moisturizer from another subscription box in anticipation of getting this Peel product so I can use them concurrently. Can’t wait to try this one. Should be great in the winter to help deal with dry patches on the skin and even things out.

FFFW16

FFFW17
RETAIL VALUE: $34

I’ve been excited about receiving this item since FFF released a spoiler for it. I received the silver one (as you can tell from the picture). It’s really awesome, not just in appearance, but Half United also gives half of all of the profits to feed children in need. Another great cause included in a FFF box. I can’t wait to wear this chic yet edgy necklace and explain its symbolism.

FFFW15
RETAIL VALUE: $44

From yourMinerals, this is a mineral eyeshadow duo. I love both of these colors. I haven’t swatched them but they are gorgeous in the containers. Actually, colors I would have picked out myself. I always love it when a subscription box gives me colors I genuinely like and can actually wear. These will be perfect for the holiday festivities coming up. Like at the party where I’ll be gifting that amazing Daniel Stone COCO Candle.

And now we have some sponsored items. Sponsored items are put into each FFF box to keep the retail value of the other items in the box higher, and they’re usually food-related and fun. Here’s what this box offers:

FFFW6

A single-serving packet of Justin’s Classic Almond Butter. I love almond butter. And peanut butter. And sunflower butter. And cashew butter. Yeah, as you can tell, this baby won’t make it through the day. The big question will be if I eat it directly from the packet or take the time to spread it on some whole-grain bread. NOM.

FFFW9

From Special K, it’s a chocolate pretzel snack bar. I’ve had these before. They’re NOM as well. This baby is going to suffer the same fate as the Justin’s Classic Almond Butter above. The question here is, which will be the first eaten.

FFFW8

A full-sized Organic Valley Organic Balance Milk Protein Shake. I’ll actually be trying this one, even though I normally only like the Atkins protein shakes. This one has 16 grams of protein, no GMOs, is lactose- and gluten-free, and contains 50% of the daily recommended calcium intake. Sounds like it could be a perfect mid-shift pick-me-up, so into the fridge it goes for later consumption (in my experience, these protein shakes always taste best when they’re icy cold).

And now for my bad news. Despite being advertised as being included in the box and even being “spoiled” yesterday afternoon, FFF apparently had a bit of a glitch in the warehouse and I didn’t receive my most anticipated item, the Passport to Beauty Tibetan Goji Berry Intense Anti-Aging Eye Serum with Retinol. A quick check of the FFF Facebook page shows that a few other people were shorted items in their boxes as well, so these things happen. However, I have notified FFF about this oversight and I’ve no doubt they’ll send the product to me ASAP. I once had a smashed bag of Pop Chips and emailed them, and they sent me an entire replacement box within 5 days. Yeah, no worries here. A lot of disappointment that it wasn’t in the initial box, but if past experience with FFF is an indicator, this oversight will be rectified quickly and satisfactorily. Here’s a picture of what I should have gotten:

abababababab
RETAIL VALUE: $88

And here they are, the entire contents (less the above eye serum) of the FabFitFun Winter 2014 box.

FFFW18
RETAIL VALUE: $383.59

Now, in spite of the little faux pas with the eye serum, I’m totally delighted with this box and am looking forward to trying every single thing in it (the cooking school online membership already has me wanting to investigate the site further to see what decadent goodies I can make for dinner, not to mention the upcoming holidays). I’ve already loaded my virtual cart at the Fashion Project website and won’t have to pay a penny for the item I’ve chosen, since even shipping is free. And everything else is just divine as well.

Take a bow, FabFitFun, this Winter box is every bit as good or perhaps even better than the Fall box.

BIG OCTOBER BEAUTY GIVEAWAY – SNEAK PEEK #12 – GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!

Published October 26, 2014 by thebeholdingeye

Happy Sunday and, to fellow fans, Happy The Walking Dead Episode 3 Night! We’re all about The Walking Dead on Sunday nights here at Casa Beholding Eye. We like to think of it as quality family time gathered around the TV after work and having dinner…even though we rarely speak a word until the episode is over.

There are less than 2 days left to enter the giveaway and we’re up to Item #12 (one sneak peek featured 2 items).

This blog is lengthy but there may or may not be a little “twist” at the end, so I encourage you to read all the way through. *hint hint*

This one is probably going to rock your socks off so be prepared.

From the FabFitFun Fall Edition box is “the” big-ticket item. Renowned for skincare product extraordinaire, here it is:

der

From Dermalogica, one of the top names in the skincare industry, is a full-sized Skin Hydrating Booster. I love me some Dermalogica but, truth be told, my skin is sensitive and a bit combination but rarely, if ever, dry. I’m sure this is an exceptional product (as are all Dermalogica products), but it would just go into my Skincare Graveyard as I would likely never use it. My skin’s quirkiness is your gain, readers.

RETAIL VALUE: $56.00.

So let’s take a look at the other 10 items in the giveaway and do a quick recap, in no particular order:

20141006_100420

RETAIL VALUE: $38.00

RETAIL VALUE: $25.00

RETAIL VALUE: $95.00

20141005_152104
RETAIL VALUE: $55.00

ESTIMATED RETAIL VALUE: $404.00

With an estimated retail of over $400, not to mention most of these items are top-of-the-line, in-demand products featured in recent subscription boxes, this is a giveaway in which we at The Beholding Eye take great pride offering.

A few people have asked why do a giveaway as opposed to selling the items on Ebay and making a quick buck (or a lot of quick bucks, considering the retail value).

Well, that’s a very good question.

1. Because it’s better to give than to receive? Yeah, sometimes, but I’m usually pretty self-absorbed.
2. Because before I discovered subscription boxes, I would have crawled through broken glass on my hands and knees to get my bloody hands on a just a few of these products? Definitely.
3. I’d like to let someone who will be able to use and appreciate these amazing products have a shot at owning them? Yes indeedy.
4. Because I’m nice? (Nah, get that idea out of your head…I’m actually quite snarky — as one can tell reading my other blog entries, I’m sure — and straightforward, although with a hint of diplomacy…”nice” isn’t the first word that usually comes to mind when describing myself.

I don’t know, actually. I think it’s more a combination of #2 and #3. I’ve won a couple of very small giveaways and I know the euphoria that comes with winning. As ecstatic as I’ve been to win a few relatively minor things, I can’t even imagine being the winner of this haul. I’d probably be shouting from the rooftops and dancing in the streets…and THAT’S the reason I’m really doing this. I want to make a fellow beauty-holic happy (not to be confused with being “nice,” so banish that thought out of your mind). And while these products are UH-MAZING, realistically, they don’t do me a bit of good when they’re not right for my hair/skin type or if it’s a duplicate of a great product that I’d like for someone else to be able to try. Times are still tough for a lot of people…being able to make someone happy with a box full of fantabulous beauty products just seems like the right thing for this beauty-holic to do.

So, if you haven’t entered the drawing yet, I strongly encourage you to do so now. Entries end tomorrow at midnight. I may or may not put another product into the mix (if I can find it…I put it up for safekeeping for the drawing and have yet to unearth it) but as it stands right now these will be the contents of that glorious USPS box complete with tracking you’ll be receiving if Rafflecopter chooses you as the winner.*

From this point forward, I plan to do monthly or semi-monthly giveaways, albeit to a lesser degree. Two to three times a year, I plan on doing a blockbuster giveaway such as this one. Again, it will be products I simply cannot use or duplicates I have received. Sharing the wealth and all with my readers. I hope everyone who entered will continue to follow me on social media for updates, reviews, unboxings, etc. I’m planning on getting a laptop with a camera after the holidays so I can also do vlogging.

And Happy Sunday and Happy The Walking Dead Episode 3 night from Casa The Beholding Eye to you. See our bright and shining faces? That’s yours truly photo-bombing in the background.

*Due to the overwhelming response to this giveaway and our heartfelt appreciation at all of the kind words, new subscribers, new followers to our social media, etc., we were thinking….Perhaps we should add a second-place winner, who will receive a cosmetic bag full of various and sundry samples we’ve been receiving in our boxes for a few months now. While not nearly as grand and glorious as first place, we think it would be a nice little “thank you” gesture for one additional reader who took the time to enter the contest. Let me know in the comments what you think about this latest addition. Au Revoir for now, and stay beautiful!

(Please note that the giveaway will only be available for US and Canadian residents, otherwise postage would be cost-prohibitive…Thanks for understanding!)

BIRCHBOX OCTOBER 2014: KEEP IT OR KICK IT?

Published October 24, 2014 by thebeholdingeye

I’ll be up front about the October Birchbox. I wasn’t thrilled with my preview of what I would be receiving, but I remained optimistic and hoped that the products actually in my hand would be more exciting than the pictures on the website.

As the new year approaches, here at Casa Beholding Eye, we’re deciding which boxes are actually worth keeping and which need to be kicked…as in, kicked to the curb. Birchbox, which has an amazing points system (which can be accrued simply by reviewing the products received on the BB website) and spent as cash in the Birchbox store, and those points are what have keep me hanging on every month.

Let’s see if they can retain my subscription with the October box.

20141024_100057

And there it is. It feels amazingly…light. Well, let’s dive in…maybe something Friday Fabulous awaits.

20141024_100135

20141024_101419

First up is a 4-shade sampler of Coastal Scents Revealed palette in the shades “Latte.” These colors are definitely right up my alley, lovely nude/neutral shades suitable for every day wear and totally able to be built up for more a more dramatic evening-out look. The size of these samples is decent as well, containing enough of each shade for several applications.

The only con? I love this Coastal Scents palette so much that I already own the full-sized version…unfortunately this sampler isn’t “purse-friendly” and can’t be taken for quick touch ups on the go. C’eset la vie.

Moving right along…

20141024_101347

Next up is a sample size of Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips. This product was apparently originally made for nursing moms and apparently was found to make an amazing lip balm, as well as a good balm for dry cuticles, elbows, etc. I’ve actually heard good things about this product, so I’m looking forward to trying it.

20141024_101333

And the next item to find its way into my hand is Dr. Brandt Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner. I normally love Dr. Brandt products, and this is apparently an award-winning gel that helps to degunk pores for fewer blackheads and smoother skin. I’ve gotten several Dr. Brandt samples over the past couple of months in various subscription boxes that I’ve loved, so I’ll definitely give this product a try.

20141024_101258

I’ve already read high praises for this product. Beauty Protector is supposed to lock in color, protect from heat damage, and add silkiness. I’ve heard that not only does this product work well, but that the smell is UH-MAZING. After spraying a tiny bit onto my hand for the sniff test, I concur. It smells wonderful. Having thick, naturally wavy hair that’s been every color of the rainbow and beyond, I’m always on the prowl for products like this, so I’ll definitely be giving Beauty Protector the next time I wash my hair.

20141024_101317

I’ve saved my favorite product in this month’s Birchbox for last. This caught my eye as soon as I pulled back the tissue paper. This jar is just gorgeous, so perfectly “me.” It contains Camille Beckman Tuscan Honey Glycerine Hand Therapy. I have no idea how good the product inside may or may not be…I was so immediately enamored of the packaging that it really doesn’t matter. I’m going to keep this gorgeous little gem on the desk in my office…and likely order a full-sized product as well. The black container with the red rose is the perfect combination. I’m in love with this product without even trying it. Brava, Camille Beckman!

And there we have it, the October Birchbox.

Birchbox is $10/month and offers the easy-to-accure points benefit that I described above.

I’ve had months where Birchbox knocks it out of the park for me. I’ve unfortunately had more months where the products fail to excite me and end up in the “graveyard” of products that maybe I’ll get around to using someday. Such as during a Zombie Apocalypse where I wouldn’t be able to go out and purchase anything else.

Having a couple of hundred of points accumulated, I browsed the Birchbox store and decided to cash out my points by purchasing a 2-pack of Beauty Blenders.

Keep it or kick it?

There are so many other subscription boxes out there to choose from (some truly amazing ones, such as BoxyCharm, The French Box, and Lip Factory) that I feel my $10 is much better put toward a more expensive box that will contain products that I’m more likely to love…and thus more likely to use.

Au revoir, Birchbox. I’ve enjoyed our time together for the most part, but it’s time to go our separate ways.

STATUS: KICKED TO THE CURB.

Just because Birchbox isn’t a good fit for me doesn’t mean that some of you readers won’t love it and find it perfect for your needs. It’s great for sampling new products that you might not have otherwise heard of and the points are a huge perk of a Birchbox subscription. If you’d like to check it out further for yourself, here are some links to get you started:

THE FRENCH BOX: HERE COMES NOVEMBER…AND A DISCOUNT CODE! Viva La France!!!

Published October 18, 2014 by thebeholdingeye

UPDATE: The November French Box is shipping out Monday. If you’d like to grab one “hot off the presses,” so to speak AND get a discount, enter this promo code when ordering: RRAMY8A4D8

I am beyond excited to see what French treasures the November box will hold but, for your oooh-la-la enjoyment, here’s a recap of the October box and all of its awesome jewels!

Today, IT arrived. My first French Box. A new subscription box that launched a month ago (which I unfortunately missed out on as I wasn’t aware of the existence of The French Box until it had already sold out). Below is the October subscription box, The Warmth of Provence. It is very French, very classy, and very tres chic.

Here is the package the mail carrier greeted me with this morning:

FB4

THE FRENCH BOX. In all of its pink splendor, holding all things French. I admit, I stared in awe and wonder at it for a few minutes before actually tearing into it. It’s French. It could have been filled with frozen Ore Ida French fries and I’d have probably still be all atwitter over it.

Let’s get it out of the official shipping box and see what lies within, shall we?

FB19

And there it is, in all of its French glory, too tempting to gaze upon any longer and begging to be ripped into. Let’s go…

Oooo la la, it’s contents are wrapped quite nicely! I feel almost guilty as I gently tug on the ends of the ribbon to untie it.

FB2

And on top of the package are the following French lovelies:

FB15

A lovely French postcard, suitable for framing. Which is exactly what I intend to do…collect these little objets d’art and frame them to hang on my office wall. This one, which features a casually chic French woman states, “In Provence, the sun rises twice a day: Once in the morning and after the afternoon nap.” Le sigh.

FB16

Merci beaucoup! A descriptor leaflet explaining all of the products in English (which is a great idea since it appears all of the product labels are in French and I do not parlez-vu Francais well – if at all).

Now let’s look at the contents one exquisite item at a time. Unlike my usual gusto with which I tear into subscription boxes, this one is eliciting reverence from me and I’m more subdued. Ahhh, France…

And we’re off with a homerun right out of the box…With a cover illustration by the renowned fashion designer Christian Lacroix, this is a lovely journal, filled with blank pages on which to jot down one’s thoughts. I’d have paid the cost of the box for just this single beautiful item.

FB14

Next up is this sweet (literally) little packet of gems. From Couleur Calisson, it is a small package containing what is apparently a French treat, a mini “calisson.” Here is where I need to use a lifeline and call my friend Google to translate. “Calissons are a traditional French candy consisting of a smooth, pale yellow, homogeneous paste of candied fruit (especially melons and oranges) and ground almonds topped with a thin layer of royal icing.” Okay, so they not only LOOK delectable, they sound delectable as well.
RETAIL PRICE: $3.00.

FB8

Gently putting aside my newly-discovered French candied treasure, the next item I pick up is by Atelier Cologne Colognes Absolues (pure perfume) in Santal Carmin. Turning back to my friend Google, I discovered the following about this company: “Atelier Cologne is the first Maison de Parfum dedicated entirely to Cologne, the legendary fragrance classic.” Smells divine and Mr. Beholding Eye will be delighted to use this fine French fragrance. Oooh la la indeed!
RETAIL PRICE: $3.00.

FB20

Okay, now that the gentleman’s selection from the box is out of the way, let’s dive into what the French Box has included for the madam of the house.

FB7
First up is this beautiful Matis powder brush, made of goat hair and amazingly soft against the skin. The descriptor card indicates it applies pressed and loose powder, bronzer, and mineral makeup effortlessly. I’ve no doubt that it does, but it’s almost too pretty to use. LOVE IT!!!
RETAIL PRICE: $15.50.

FB9

Also for the lady of the house is this amazing Sothy’s Volume Care Mascara. I haven’t used this yet, but it appears quite glossy on its thick applicator brush. It’s Sothy’s and it’s French…Who am I kidding? I’m going to love it more than any mascara I’ve ever used, even if it leaves me with a set of eyes a raccoon would envy at the end of the night.
RETAIL PRICE: $28.00.

FB13

FB12

Next up is a set of 4 Oshibori 100% cotton hand made tea towels infused with a lovely green tea scent. AMAZING. These will be tres chic the next time we have a couple of guests over for dinner for a touch of class.
RETAIL PRICE: $5.00.

FB21
And what is that lovely smell coming from the box? Could it be this gorgeous pink-and-white swirled Durance Marseille soap sending up the delicate scent of fresh-cut roses? Oh my my…my heart is now almost officially stolen by French Box. Durance USA was also kind enough to give a 15% off coupon, no minimum, for purchases from its website. J’aime cela!!!
RETAIL PRICE: $7.90.

FB11

FB17

The last item in this seemingly never-ending box of French finery is Le Panier Francais Provence French Herbs Mix, along with a recipe card containing 3 tres French recipes in which one might make use of these herbs.

And with this goes the last little bit of my French-loving heart. Beauty, elegance, scents, and now cooking? Yeah, I’m officially head over heels with The French Box!
RETAIL PRICE: $6.99.

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m over-the-moon delighted with my first French Box. It’s such a lovely assortment of products for everyone to enjoy, each packaged and presented amazingly well. I scored my first box for $14 with a promotional code (retail value of the box is approximately $65), and I believe the box will be $24/month from here on out…which is fine by me. Hey, I’ll gladly work overtime to squeeze this box of awesomeness into the monthly budget…and to get those adorably charming and quirky postcards that are suitable for framing.
